In addition to research and evaluations of
virtual volunteering, that is tracked here on the Virtual
Volunteering Wiki, which has been put together as a supplement to
The
Last
Virtual
Volunteering Guidebook, there are also various other web
sites, blogs, publications and initiatives focused on virtual
volunteering, often under different names (digital volunteering, online
volunteering, microvolunteering, etc.). It's impossible to create a
comprehensive list of such - just as it would be impossible to make a list
of all web sites, blogs and other non-research related to volunteering, in
general. This list gives an overview of the different ways various people
and organizations are talking about virtual volunteering, especially
internationally. Also see this page tracking news
articles, blog posts, and other updates on virtual volunteering.
E-wolontariat.
This organization, based in Poland, is, in the opinion of this wiki's
author, the leading European organization regarding the study and
promotion of virtual volunteering / online community engagement for
NGOs. They publish their own E-volunteering
Handbook (48 pages), in English,
in Polish (PODRĘCZNIK
E-WOLONTARIATU) and in Ukrainian (ДОВІДНИК
З Е-ВОЛОНТЕРСТВА), a basic, practical, free guide for
individuals and organizations who want to use internet technologies to
support and involve volunteers. They also host the annual Discover
E-Volunteering event, a friendly competition to both reward
outstanding virtual volunteering efforts and to create more awareness
among all NGOs and those that support such.
The
Social Good Brazil Program started from a partnership
established between two Brazilian organizations: IVA – The Volunteer
Center of the State of Santa Catarina which manages the largest online
volunteer platform in the country (called VOL); and ICom – The
Community Foundation for Greater Florianópolis. In 2008, IVA pioneered
digital volunteering in Brazil, with the support of the UN, and
launched Portal
Voluntários Online. The initiative is supported by Fundação
Telefônica, and written about in the book Digital
Volunteering by Mónica Galiano.
