Four women on a trail in the woods carry a large rock in a net.

finding strength, knowing you aren’t alone & being a part of a caring community – no God required.

Someone posted this to Mastodon and I thought it was so wonderful:

It is hard not to feel overwhelmed by all the bad news from around the world right now, a sense of hopelessness at all the cruelty and selfishness.
This weekend, I will be joining a small group of like-minded friends doing voluntary conservation work in our local woodland – we aren’t looking to fix the world, just make our little bit of it better.
So, my friends, do what you can to make the world a better place – kindness costs nothing, except perhaps a little time and effort.

In your community, no matter where you are, there are nonprofits focused on

  • helping refugees and immigrants,
  • on some aspect of equity,
  • on human rights,
  • on women’s access to abortion services,
  • on economic empowerment,
  • on worker’s rights,
  • on access to jobs and housing,
  • on racial justice,
  • on celebrating and promoting human performance and culture, via theater, dance, music, painting, sculpture, etc.
  • on helping women experiencing domestic violence,
  • on fighting against censorship,
  • on preserving or restore a natural habitat,

and on and on and on. And they need you as a volunteer. It won’t fix most of what’s wrong right now. It won’t FIX even a little of it. But you need to find strength in knowing you aren’t alone and to feel a part of a caring community. And this is a great way to do it.

Go to your favorite search engine and search for these nonprofits in your own community. Sign up and volunteer for just one half a day, if they have such an opportunity. Or several days. Don’t expect the experience to be perfect. Don’t expect it to restore your soul completely. Just get busy. Do a little good. Try again with another organization if you need to.

Engage with your community, doing good, and engaging in activities that directly contradict the efforts of the current Presidential administration, even if they never say that’s what they do.

I have an incredibly detailed web page on how to volunteer here. It’s over-the-top detailed. If you can’t find a volunteering opportunity after reading it and following its directions, I really don’t know what else to tell you.
