I lived in Austin, Texas for less than five years. I’m not from Texas. Yet, within a year, I knew EVERY boutique hotel, every funky hotel, every historic hotel, despite never staying in one. I joke that I got a job at the United Nations because of the funky place I had him stay. I also knew every fantastic bar (especially those with live music) for whatever vibe you were looking for, even if I didn’t go there myself, and I knew at least 20 fantastic restaurants for whatever your budget.
I have lived in the Portland, Oregon metro area since 2009 & LAST WEEK is the first time I heard of The Society Hotel in Portland, Oregon. Historic building. Once a sailor’s hotel. Great location. Affordable. There’s even a bunk room. Iconic lobby cafe. Rooftop deck.
And it’s for sale because it’s not profitable.
This is so typical of the culture of PDX: how many times have I asked for ideas of places to stay in Portland? I’ve specifically asked of friends living in Portland for something EXACTLY like this. The comment is always, “Oh, I dunno… I’ve never stayed in a hotel here” or “When my family visits, they just stay with me” or silence.
We stayed in Portland in January for my birthday. We would have LOVED to have stayed here! But we’d never heard of it.
Anyway, nothing against the Society Hotel, I guess. And it looks great – I’m putting info here on my blog because, hey, if you are going to stay in Portland, this place looks GREAT. But unlike someone from Oregon, I’m going to make sure everyone knows about it! Which I guess means it’s not cool anymore…
Now, if someone will tell me where the good Mexican restaurant is in the PDX area, life will be even better for me here.
