She had bought them a while back and couldn’t go. We had never heard of Steiner cabins, but after viewing a 10-minute video on YouTube about them, I was all in, despite the one-way two-hour drive. The tour happens just once a year.

Henry Steiner was a German immigrant to the USA who built about 100 cabins throughout the forest on Mount Hood in Oregon, from 1925 to 1952. Each year, a nonprofit group of volunteers arranges a tour of five or six of these buildings, which are now second homes for people living not just in Portland, but other parts of the West Coast.

These cabins have all sorts of features that make them unique, like the one-long, naturally-curved log stair railings, in their natural form, the stone fireplaces using only local stones, door handles also made from pieces of branches, naturally curved logs used for door window settings and more. Many of the doors and windows have unique all-wooden locks. No cabin is the same as any other. None were built to last for 100 years! None were built originally on any foundation – several have been raised up by new owners and a foundation put in place.

Here are my photos from our tour. The featured photo with this blog is not mine – that’s not one of the cabins we went into.

Here’s an excellent story about them from OPB, with some good photos.

I still can’t believe that I didn’t know about these cabins until the day before I laid eyes on them. I pride myself on knowing the coolest historic things about Oregon, as well as the best things its natural spaces have to offer. But somehow, I missed this amazing story.

I’m so grateful for such an unexpected adventure. It was much needed for a number of reasons. Thanks, Brenna!

It’s been a long time since an adventure has dropped into my lap.
