- Respondent's Role in Working with Volunteers at Organization
- As founder of this educational nonprofit, I have done
everything from recruiting the volunteers to organizing them to
encouraging them and soon to be handing and sending out our first
volunteer recognition certificates.
- How did you hear about this Project?
- no response
- What other staff have involved volunteers virtually at
your organization?
- no response
- Approximately how many of your online volunteers provide
technical assistance to your staff or to other volunteers?
- 5
- Please describe the kinds of activities these technical
assistance volunteers provide to your organization:
- Designed web page, maintain it, compiling info
on possible grants to go after, research into legal and accounting needs of
our nonprofit.
- Approximately how many of your volunteers provide direct
support to clients / recipients of service via the Internet?
- 50+
- Please describe the kinds of volunteer activities these
direct contact volunteers provide to your organization:
- MOO programming, MOO admin, training teachers
and students in how to use the MOO, teaching teachers how to teach on DU,
organizing and moderating real-time discussion groups on such things as
james joyce or support groups for online educators or librarians. Doing
presentations in physical life to show educators our virtual campus.
Moderating email lists involving MOOed and online education in general.
Working with the kids who are on DU to create MOO projects that teach
something, to use the web interface or VRML. Present at the online seminars
on how they teach on DU.
- How did you recruit the volunteers you involve(d) via
the Internet?
- no response
- How did you screen/orient the volunteers you involve(d)
via the Internet?
- They find us from other MOOs, educational lists, via
word of mouth from teachers and students already using DU, from physical
life workshops in their schools, our web site (usually they searched on
distance ed or something similar). Also, via lists that our users post on,
literature, social work, biology, audiology, physics, education, etc.
Usually they essentially screen themselves. They log on and if they like
it, they stay. Some become more and more active and if we like what they
have been doing, we might ask them if they would like to be managers, which
is a title for ppl on DU who can help others with MOO-related things.
- How do you supervise and recognize/reward online
volunteers for their contributions?
- If they are good programmers, we may ask them to be
wizards (fanciful term left over from the type of program we use). We use
their work on the MOO as examples of what can be done on a MOO in demos and
workshops. We let them tell about it to other teachers or administrators.
- Have you ever surveyed these online volunteers about
their experiences with your organization?
- no response
- What factors in your organization have promoted the
success of your virtual volunteering program?
- no response
- What factors in your organization have impeded the
success of your virtual volunteering program?
- no response
- Please add any other comments you would like to send to
us:
- DU is a new nonprofit and an entirely virtual one. Our entire
board and administration are located in different places across the
country. We are in desperate need of volunteers who can help with legal and
accounting for an organization as well as fundraising. We just received
our 501(c)(3) last November so are very much novices.
