So sorry I cannot donate to your very worthwhile cause (another downside of unemployment).

So many people were so generous in helping me fundraise for my trip to Paraguay with Habitat for Humanity last year. Your money did not go towards my travel there nor my accommodations—I paid that myself. Your money when to support Habitat and its work in Paraguay. Those guys you see me standing next to, professionals at house building? You helped pay those local workers to supervise the volunteers’ work and put up with me.

That’s one of many reasons unemployment hurts so much right now: to not be able to donate to anything to YOUR worthy causes, as well as those I care deeply about. I ask you to help, and you came through, but I can’t return the favor. Your children are raising money for all sorts of wonderful activities, you’re volunteering with some wonderful nonprofits, you’ve tied your birthday celebrations to fundraising for some wonderful organization, and you post your requests for donations,… and I can’t help.

There are some nonprofits I’ve given a little something to every year for the last decade. I am going to have to cut them all off after this year, unless something wonderful happens and a great short-term contract or, even better, a JOB, lands in my lap.

I’m so, so sorry that I cannot support ya’ll, as you have done me. And I needed to say that.

Very lucky to be married to someone with a job right now…
