When I was in grade school back in Kentucky and learning the history of Western Europe, what I remember most was learning that a group was in such-and-such area and sometimes they had a tribal name and sometimes not, and then another group migrated into the area, and that new group had a name, and these two groups merged through war and conquest, and then they often got a new name after a few years, and then some of the merged group would move somewhere else and conquer somewhere else, and another group would come in to that first area and do some conquesting of their own, and on and on and on.
When did Saxons stop being Saxons and Angles stop being Angles and then they were Anglo-Saxons? When did all the Germanic tribes stop being individual tribes and start being just Germanic? There were more than 80 tribes that became what we now call Gauls. Where did the Gauls go?
The way people spoke English in 1545 is now how we speak it now. And speaking of the time of King VIII, a black musician is among the six trumpeters depicted in the royal retinue of Henry VIII in the Westminster Tournament Roll, an illuminated manuscript dating from 1511. A small number of black Africans worked as independent business owners in London in the late 1500s.
Potatoes are not native to Europe. No European ate a potato before the 1500s. Nor did they have tomatoes, corn, turkeys, bell peppers, pumpkins or various beans, like kidney or lima.
Constant migration. Constant moving. Lots of fighting. Lots of merging. Adoption of new foods. Words being added. Pronunciations changing. Languages coming and going. And that’s EVERYWHERE, always, not just Western Europe.
The borders of what we call the USA were different in 1776 than they are now. And different 50 years after that. And different 50 years after that. The amount of territory that is called the USA has changed dramatically over 250 years. There’s no doubt it will change again.
And then there’s the new obsession by so many in the US with characterizing illegal migration as a crime worthy of punishment by immediate imprisonment, followed by deportation, even to a country the person has never been to. Folks, that’s not a common practice. And when the US has engaged in mass deportations, which Politico has an article about, there’s been no measurable economic or societal benefit for such. As I said in an earlier blog, the reality is that deporting large numbers of people is incredibly expensive, tears families apart, and destabilizes businesses and communities. Large scale imprisonments and deportations don’t make you safer. Please, learn the truth about immigrants – it’s not what you are being told by NewsNation and Fox News and the current President of the USA.
There’s no such thing as racial purity. You are a mutt. Those of us who have engaged in mapping our families genealogies know this.
I’m not saying let’s not have country borders. I’m not saying let’s not regulate who comes in to our country and how.
But I am saying that your way is NOT the right way. It’s not good for our country. It’s not good for humanity.
