It’s really hard to camp at state parks in Oregon: many are fully booked on the weekends six months in advance! It was in February, after we were settling down from a LOT of cross country (and even international) travel that we decided to try to find somewhere to camp the last weekend in April, when we knew we’d be itching for an adventure, and we really wanted to take Lucinda the dog somewhere. There were just three spots left at Milo McIver State Park in Estacada, a site we’ve never been to. It’s just 50 miles away, in another county.
It’s an outstanding state park! So much hiking, with beautiful scenery! And there is so much thick greenery between campsites. Definitely one of the best state parks in the state.
If you go:
- take a photo on your phone of the more detailed map of the park that you will find at the information board next to the camp hosts – it has all of the trails on it. The handout you get from check-in does NOT have all the trails.
- we try to avoid inner-loop campsites because they are usually too close together and people in the outer loop will march right through your campsite on the way to the bathroom. That wasn’t the case here, where the foliage is so thick and the campground so small.
- just like at most campsites, the hosts do NOT enforce quiet hours. So bring earplugs and hope that the Loud Family nor the Party Group isn’t there when you are.
