Coordinating After School Clubs & Activities

After school clubs are extra-curricular or enrichment programs. Jennifer notes: "I worked closely with the Assistant Principal on this project. I taught soccer, volleyball and gymnastics throughout the year."

After school clubs are usually from 3-4pm, four times a week. Volunteers can pick any day or days to do the activity they want to lead. Activities can range from Spanish classes to cooking classes to Odyssey of the Mind to sports activities to drama classes to dance classes to... just about anything.

VISTAs are not required to lead such activities, but you are encouraged to find AmeriCorps members or other volunteers who would be interested in such. AmeriCorps members and volunteers have the option of getting paid per hour for leading extra-curricular or enrichment programs.

Those who wish to lead such after school activities must submit their idea in writing to the Vice Principal. It is up to these volunteers to arrange permissions to do these activities with the Vice Principal, but you, the VISTA, should make sure that all requests are being reviewed, and that answers and next steps provided promptly. You should also keep track of what after school activities are going on, and provide assistance with volunteer recruitment if it is needed.

VISTAs and other volunteers interested in leading these activities must also fill out the AISD application (you can get this from the office) and get a TB shot. Along with their completed application, they must also submit copies of their drivers licenses and social security cards, as well as the original of the shot record.

Make sure the volunteers pick the day of the week that best suits them and a preferred age group they would like to work with. Also make sure that you work with the Vice Principal to get after-school opportunities well-communicated to teachers and kids.
