Web Sites Listing Local Volunteering Opportunities

credits and disclaimer

Introduction

These web sites are NOT a place to find volunteering abroad opportunities - volunteering outside the country where you are currently living. Rather, these web sites are for citizens and residents of a country, including students, to find volunteering opportunities in that country, and usually even more locally (their city or county) where they are living.

If you are a nonprofit, non-governmental organization (NGO), charity or other volunteer-involving agency, you may be able to use one of these sites to recruit residents that are local to you to volunteer (but not every community is served by a volunteer matching web site). More here about volunteer recruitment

Volunteer matching web sites - where either organizations post their needs for volunteers and volunteers respond, or people post what they want to do as volunteers and organizations respond (this latter model never works) - come and go. As soon as the Internet went mainstream in the 1990s, a plethora of such sites launched. It's hard to keep up with which ones still exist and which have gone away.

And here's a reality check: NO WEB SITE WILL EVER LIST EVERY VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITY IN A COMMUNITY. No one web site will ever list MOST of them. Just as you have to use multiple web sites, and just as you have to talk to friends and colleagues, to find paid work, or find a place to live, or find a date, you will probably have to use a variety of methods to find the volunteering opportunity that's perfect for you.

North America & South America

For the USA (for American citizens and residents, including students who are here from abroad and want to volunteer while studying and are legally able to do so):

There are even more volunteer-recruitment sites that are focused on specific cities or regions - you can find them by going to your favorite search engine and type in the word volunteer and the name of your city, or the word nonprofit and help animals or whatever and the name of your city.

If your city in the USA is served by a United Way, the web site for such may have a volunteer matching feature.

For Canada (for Canadian citizens and residents):
Para México (for citizens and residents of Mexico - some NGOs MAY accept foreigners):
Hacesfalta.org.mx

For Peru (for Peruvian citizens and residents - some NGOs may accept foreigners, but you will have to contact such directly and tell them you will be entirely self-funded)

For Online Volunteering / Virtual Volunteering (where the volunteer is remote to the organization or person being helped)

Also see this list of volunteer recruitment sites maintained by Energize, Inc. It is has somewhat different listings than the page you are reading now. I'm not sure the Energize page is updated anymore, however.
